Prepare Skin For Winter

Winter’s on its way, and so is the cold weather it brings.

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your skin, and in the UK, it definitely get’s cold.

Chilly temperatures can dry out your skin, and worsen pigmentation conditions like rosacea.

You might have noticed that during the winter, your skin doesn’t have the same healthy glow as it did through summer, that’s normal.

However, there are ways to combat this!

It’s important to make small adjustments to your skincare routine as the seasons change, because you skin will have different needs at different times of the year.

Here are my tips of how promote healthy skin that lasts even through the cold months.

Amp Up The Moisturiser

During the summer, you may have kept your choice of moisturiser light and weightless. In the winter, it’s worth considering a heavier, stronger choice to protect your skin outside. Try to stick to skincare products that are near to fragrance-free and sensitive skin friendly to avoid irritation and breakouts.

Keep The SPF Going

Even though we don’t see as much of the sun, it’s important to wear SPF every day, all year round. You may not have as high a risk of sunburn, but cold weather can dry out your skin very quickly, SPF can help prevent this. It’s also worth mentioning that sun is the biggest cause of ageing and this includes during the winter. UV rays can still penetrate clouds and reflect off things like snow, leading to skin damage. I love Obagi, it’s a weightless mineral SPF that protects you all year round.

Lip Balm At All Times

For me, the first sign of winter is chapped lips. As soon as it gets colder outside, my lips are in serious need of some TLC. You should carry lip balm with you all all times, reapplying every couple of hours, especially before you go outside. Brownie points if you have a lip balm with SPF in it.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation can help with getting rid of any buildup of flaky skin cells caused by cold weather. However, recommended exfoliation is not what you think it might be. It needs to be gentle. Please don’t rub hard scrubs on your face, you will compromise your skin barrier and cause more damage. Stick to a chemical exfoliant, apply a few nights a week. They are a great way to get rid of dead skin cells, without scratching your skin. ALWAYS wear SPF if you are using chemical exfoliants.

Winter can be tough on your skin, but there are simple adjustments you can make to your skincare routine that will help keep your skin healthy and glowing all year round.

If you’re not sure what your skin needs, come along for an appointment with our skin analysis machine. It scans every layer of your skin, assesses any potential damage, and recommends treatments - think of it like your skin’s MOT.

During winter, focus on booting moisture and keeping yous skin, lips and hands hydrated.
